Non-residential buildings (excluding industrial buildings) account for approximately 13% of the building stock in Germany but are responsible for more than one-third of building-related final energy consumption (267 TWh). There is therefore still enormous potential in this area for data-driven approaches to improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

KickStarter-G – Energy savings through intelligent building control systems
Key Challenges and Goals
The current stock of 2.7 million non-residential buildings – which account for a significant share of final energy consumption – offers a potential CO2 saving of up to 176,000 tonnes in Germany alone through energy-optimized building control systems. Currently, existing buildings of this type are rarely optimized for energy efficiency, and the comfort of building users is taken into account even more sporadically. The goal of the BMBF-funded “KMU-innovativ” project KickStarter-G is to develop a novel, end-to-end, AI-based building control solution for non-residential buildings, aimed at achieving significant energy efficiency optimization while ensuring high occupant comfort and optimized indoor air quality parameters.
